Undet for AutoCAD

I run a 3D laser survey company which produces as built 3D models and Topographical surveys in Revit. I have just changed my entire workflow from AutoCAD to Revit so still have some level of familiarity with AutoCAD. I was looking for ground cleaning software that could handle some of the large topographical files I collect. With a number of the products that I fond during my research it was hard to find a blend that wasn't complicated, prone to blue screening due to memory limitations or with limits of the size of point clouds. Undet for AutoCAD seemed to...

Undet for AutoCAD

We have used Undet for a year now and have found the improvements in our workflow to be significant. The interface is very user-friendly and highly intuitive and the software incredibly stable, allowing us to work with far larger data sets within the AutoCAD environment than was previously possible. We are now able to import an entire scan project into CAD, no longer wasting time pre-processing it into smaller chunks nor loading and unloading them whilst drawing – everything is readily available at our fingertips. Visually, the quality of the data is crisp and the colour control options vast. The...

Undet for AutoCAD

With Undet we can easily create classes and scan groups e.g. scans inside and outside the railway. This allows us to turn off areas of point cloud data that are not required and concentrate only on the area of interest. The resulting display is both quicker and more detailed. The ease of handling within Undet when creating point cloud view sections has helped us to create models in a much more timely and efficient manner but the tool that has most impressed is the SmartBoard. With SmartBoard you can easily create profiles or cross sections with the required depth; an...

Undet for AutoCAD

We use UNDET on a daily basis. One particular example of how we use the software is when we scanned a local school with a Leica P20 scanner, totalling nearly 100 individual scans. Following the registration process, we utilising UNDET to help us to separate scans of each floor plan together with the building’s exterior in order to process the external elevations. UNDET makes sense when viewed from a technical perspective, but the software also makes commercial sense to us as it has given us huge advantages in terms of time-saving benefits as we can now process large point counts...

* Undet works with Windows only. Compatible with AutoCAD 2024, 2023 & 2022

Undet is a simple yet powerful AutoCAD Point Cloud plug-in that directly imports and utilizes any size and complexity point cloud data in AutoCAD. It’s an ideal solution for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals who wants to accelerate the production of accurate 2D, 3D & BIM deliverables based on point clouds.

There are two ways to import point cloud data into AutoCAD: You can use a native AutoCAD point cloud import feature and attach Recap files into (*.RCP / *.RCS). Or you can use an advanced Undet point cloud plugin to import point clouds in AutoCAD. This will allow you to expand the capabilities of point cloud management and increase productivity when dealing with point cloud data directly in AutoCAD.

With the Undet plugin, you can import any point cloud file into AutoCAD from a 3D laser scanner, UAV, 3D sensor or photogrammetry software. Supported point cloud formats: *.E57, *.FLS, *.RCP/RCS, *.PTX, *.ZFS,*.LAS, *.LAZ, *.PTS, *.PLY, *.DP, *.FPR, *.LSPROJ, *.FWS, *.CL3, *.CLR, *.RSP, ASCII / NEZ (X,Y,Z/RGB) and custom ASCII / TXT file format imports.

Point clouds can be used in AutoCAD for a variety of purposes throughout the project life cycle for design, construction, operation, retrofits, and renovation projects:

  • Digitize the existing building or any structure, and make its 3D model or 2D drawings (accurate as-built documentation).
  • Plan and design. Point clouds can be used as base information about existing conditions by providing detailed information for planning and designing new construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Visualize ideas and see how they will fit and affect the existing environment. Point clouds provide a realistic 3D representation of the scanned object or environment.
  • Carry out engineering assessments and measurements. You can analyze and measure volume, area, or distance between point cloud points AutoCAD.

Cutting the point cloud is not only possible, but it is also necessary when working with it. And all additional AutoCAD point cloud plugins aim to expand these features. It is better to avoid point cloud moving, nevertheless, you use specialized tools to transform point cloud coordinates. In other cases, simply moving the point cloud can cause problems: make a lot of analysis, drawing and modeling errors, which will take a long time to correct. Point cloud geometry cannot be edited, you can only slice and use different colouring modes to represent it.

Unfortunately, it is simply not possible to do everything automatically using AutoCAD point cloud tools alone. However, some processes can be fully automated or accelerated using additional AutoCAD point cloud plugins. Using the Undet point cloud software, you will be able to perform the following automatic extractions:

  • Use Auto-Multi line tool for fast 2D linework extraction with a single click to achieve best-fitting accuracy to actual point cloud slice.
  • Use automatic feature extraction tools for 3D modelling: extract, fit, extrude, divide, chamfer, and fillet 3D solids and planes.
  • Use automatic tools to generate a ground surface mesh from a point cloud by filtering out non-ground points with additional tools to edit extracted mesh. Use automatic tools to find axis; set UCS to point cloud points, align lines to reference UCS, and mark lines that do not follow UCS.
  • Use deformation analysis tools for walls, floors, custom surfaces, or multi-vertical plane analyses against point clouds. And other tools to speed up individual tasks for point cloud processing.

There are three main challenges:

  • Maintain high computer and software performance. Working with point clouds can be difficult due to their large size and complexity, and you might need special software such as Undet to handle them efficiently, especially in AutoCAD.
  • To understand the point cloud and find what need in it. As you may know, point cloud represents a copy of the digital world, and when doing laser scanning, you are capturing everything you see: furniture, people, cars, equipment, absolutely everything available at that time. Therefore, sometimes, it takes more work to understand the 3D point cloud, especially for a new user.
  • The last challenge is digitizing point clouds into 2D drawings or 3d models. To do this, you first need to know the process, how it happens, and straightforward specialized tools to make it happen quickly and easily.

You don’t need a high end computer to handle the Undet software. However, there are some technical requirements you should be aware of to ensure optimal performance.

  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 & 11 (64-bit only)
  • CPU: 3.0 GHz or faster processor. Multiple CPUs or multicore CPUs recommended for point cloud processing.
  • RAM: 16 GB or more recommended
  • GPU: We recommend using graphical processors like NVidia or AMD with a 3D Graphics accelerator card with OpenGL version 4.4 or newer, and GPU should be with at least 4 GB of VRAM
  • Hard Drive: SSD must be used for faster performance

Offering top-notch point cloud software solutions requires technical expertise and experience. That’s where the Undet point cloud plug-in for AutoCAD comes in, providing a powerful solution to enhance your point cloud processing and analysis capabilities. Developed by Terra Modus, a leading laser scanning company, Undet understands the challenges users face when trying to turn scanned data into 2D or 3D deliverables.
